Hovey Lake Fish and Wildlife Area is a premier destination in southwestern Indiana for hunting, fishing, and wildlife observation, centered around a large backwater lake on the Ohio River.
Hovey Lake Fish and Wildlife Area is located in Posey County, Indiana, adjacent to the Ohio River and is one of the state's largest public hunting and fishing sites. The area includes the expansive Hovey Lake, a backwater lake formed by the Ohio River’s historic course and connected to it via sloughs and channels. The landscape is dominated by wetlands, bottomland hardwood forests, and open water, creating essential habitat for migratory waterfowl, deer, turkey, and other wildlife species. Originally established in 1951 to provide hunting opportunities, the site has since grown to over 4,000 acres of public land offering outdoor recreation year-round. Visitors can enjoy waterfowl hunting, archery deer hunting, fishing for bass and catfish, and wildlife photography. There are several managed wetlands and moist soil units that support waterfowl in migration seasons, which attract birdwatchers and hunters alike. The area also has boat ramps and fishing piers providing access to Hovey Lake and connecting waters. While there are no developed campgrounds within the property, nearby state parks and campgrounds provide lodging options. The rich diversity of habitats makes Hovey Lake an important region for conservation and outdoor enthusiasts looking for a combination of water-based and land-based activities close to the Ohio River corridor.
